I know everyone wants to hear more about the Kits, but I've reached a frustrating plateau with them, and I'm analyzing my options.
In the meantime, I've had fresh inspiration for my favorite little nightmare beastie Spooksie.
I believe Spooksie hatched from this video in my mind. www.youtube.com/watch?v=xF3fED8EXl4 She began to come to me in the spring, noisy, pushy, affectionate and inquisitive, I had a great deal of fun drawing the psuedo skeletal hyena griffin. After a bit of research into different species, I settled with the Spotted Hyena and Griffon Vulture.
When finished, Spooksie will be a mixed media poseable plush built over a ball joint skeleton with real wings/feathers and claws(probably from a rooster). She will be approximately the size of a housecat.
From the above quick and dirty photomanips, I created these schematics for her body and joints.
Here's a dirty scan of an Anthro Spooksie lineart I did.
And finally, the progress on the process itself. I'm not sure what I was originally planning to do with her construction, but as soon as I remembered paper mache, it was a natural choice. I may use it in the future to build bases for my other sculpts, but it's really more suited to larger projects, as such.
So far I have the main mass of the body constructed, and have just begun adding details for the face, as well as a base for the lower jaw. Not pictured I have bases for her foreleg-scapula (the scapula like piece already glued on will support the wings, as well as the shoulder) and femur bone.
Her neck will of course be much longer but I figure it'd be easier to take a picture with her head sitting on the ball I have blocked out to anchor that complicated appendage.
Ideally I'd like to get some plastic doll armature for her neck and tail, but I may have to improvise with more mache (I've got a few toilet paper rolls I may cut to fit, but they're a little bulky).
I'll update again when I have at least the first joint of each limb ready, but since the holidays are coming up I'm probably going to continue to be scarce. In the meantime, I usually post smaller updates and other art happenings on my art tumblr uncannyvalleystudios.tumblr.com
And don't be afraid, Spooksie is Mostly Harmless.
